People from all over the world come to India to learn Advaita Vedanta from some Guru after studying they become teachers of Advaita and start preaching Advaita. Many write books on Advaita. But such books are based on borrowed knowledge from here and there. Such knowledge is not Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana.
All accumulated knowledge is of no use in the path of wisdom. Without realizing “What is the truth, it is impossible to realize “What is untruth?” Without realizing what is the truth and what is the untruth, it is impossible to assimilate the Self –Knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana. Thus, one must know with full and firm conviction what truth is
People think of the ‘I’ without the body as the Self. Deeper self-search reveals the fact that ‘I’ is not the Self, but the formless witness of the ‘I’ is the true Self. The witness is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness. Consciousness is real and eternal.
WHO AM ‘I’? AND ‘I AM THAT’ is only for a lower stage where one gives up externally in order to expose the false nature of the ego, which is not the full truth. To get the ultimate truth one has to inquire into the nature of the mind, which is in the form of the universe. Inquiring into nature the mind or the universe is higher. Thus, ‘WHO AM ‘I’? or ‘I AM THAT’ teachings are not complete wisdom, and the journey is incomplete.
The ‘WHO AM ‘I’?’ inquiry is good at the starting point of the pursuit of truth but later stages it created lots of confusion. When the self is genderless then it is not He/She. Therefore, using the word ‘I AM’ for the self is erroneous. Deeper self-search reveals the fact that the self is not the ‘I’, therefore ‘WHO AM I?- will not help to unfold the truth beyond the form, time and space.
Thus, it is going in the right direction in its invention and one day it will declare that everything is consciousness, which Sage Sri Sankara declared 1200 years back: ~Everything is the Atman because the Atman is in the form of consciousness.

Buddha, Sage Goudpada, and Sage Sankara are not only reformers but also the greatest Sage-scientists. Since their original thesis has been mixed up and lost in the labyrinths of philosophy and mutilated by orthodoxy, it becomes very difficult to understand and assimilate the wisdom expounded by the great masters. In addition, the conservativeness of the scholars will not allow any research other than playing with the words, which suits the mass mindset because of their egocentric outlook.
The one who holds the 'Self' as the ‘I’ never will be able to acquire Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana. Thus, it is necessary to realize first the ‘I’ is not the Self, but the 'Self' is the Soul, the witness of the ‘I’.
The ‘I-centric' teaching and teachers are not a yardstick in the path of wisdom. ‘I-centric 'teaching will not lead the seeker to the ultimate end of his inner journey.
Not by listening to Guru's sermons, nor by the study of books, not by meritorious deeds, nor by any other means can one attain Advaitic awareness, which is attainable only through association with the Gnanis and the clear quest of the Self.

Many seekers in this path of inquiry are still struggling even after long years and waiting for something to happen. Even after reading and inquiring deeply enough, still, they are unable to progress further. Even they are unable to get any benefit in their spiritual pursuit through self - inquiry they are unable to give up the self-inquiry due to the attraction to some sage of the past.
Self-inquiry is a good tool at the beginning of the pursuit of truth. But the seeker will find it inadequate in later stages. However, it creates lots of doubts and confusion. The seeker has to find the answers on his own through deeper reasoning, than all his doubts and confusions will be cleared, and he will be able to move ahead in the path of inquiry, and he will be able to reach his non-dual destination.

First, one has to mentally detach the three states from the formless witness, as unaffected by the coming and going of the three states. And then – the formless witness and the three states are one in essence. That essence is consciousness. Thus, everything is consciousness and nothing exists other than the consciousness.

Man has a firm conviction that he is an individual separate from the world, and the world existed prior to him and he is born in it afterward. This conviction makes him remain in ignorance. And ignorance makes him accept the illusion as reality. Thus, he is caught up in the web of illusion experiencing birth, life, death, and the world as reality.
What is this universe (samsara), what is this illusion to the formless soul or consciousness, the innermost self? the consciousness and the universe both are one in essence ultimately.

Only people who stick to the reality of the universe think of the body as body, ego as ego, and the world as the world. It never strikes in them the waking experience in which they exist along with their world also as unreal as a dream.
The dream becomes unreal when the waking takes place. And the waking becomes unreal when the waking entity realizes it is not the self, but the self is the formless witness (soul) of the three states.

The Man is unaware of the fact that he and his experience of the world are within the waking experience. The waking experience appears and disappears, in the same way as the dream. When there is a dream then there is no waking. When there is waking then there is no dream. When there is neither a dream nor a waking it is identified as deep sleep in the waking experience.
One is aware of the dream or deep sleep only in waking. The one which is aware of the coming and going of the three states is neither the waking entity nor the dream entity but the formless witness of the three states.
All the scriptures indicate that Atman is Brahman, and Brahman is the ultimate truth. Therefore the soul, which is in the form of consciousness, is the ultimate truth. Thus, realizing the ultimate truth is the prime goal.
A well-directed inquiry, analysis, and reasoning will lead one to his nondual destination.:~Santthosh Kumaar
