Quotations of wise men are not yardstick.+

One who has a firm conviction that what he knows or believes is true, then he must accept the accepted truth blindly and follow his chosen path without question because the path of truth is the path of verification. There is no scope for blind belief in the pursuit of truth.

In the religious path, authorities are needed. In the path of truth, they are to be regarded only as giving opinions, which may be consulted out of curiosity, but are of no value as proof.

Many people think that the Ultimate truth cannot be known and they refuse to verify the validity of their accepted conviction.   There is no use in interacting with such people, so it is better to be in silent mode.   The seeker of truth must become merely an observer in the company of those who believe they know is the ultimate truth or Brahman.

Most people think they know the truth because they have read the philosophies of all religions or they have read the books of great men.   They think what they know is right, what other people know is wrong." This unfortunate vanity is common to all men and prevents the realization of the ultimate truth or Brahman or God in truth.

Seeker of truth must begin by doubting his accumulated knowledge. Only when doubts begin to arise and start his quest for Truth. And such doubts usually first take the shape of asking why God sends epidemics and calamities and suffering?  In ancient times philosophy began with wonder, with moderns it begins with doubts.

Remember:~

Quotations of wise men are not a yardstick. Everything has to be verified and convinced by the use of reason based on facts. One may quote quotations in order to show that others have reached the same conclusion.

If anyone quotes very extensively it is because he has made the quotations as a yardstick, he has not verified the facts. One must go to the very fundamentals, to the root of thinking, to grasp the principles and not merely repeat the words of philosophical quotations.

It is wrong to say that, the ultimate truth is known only by intuition. It is known by Reason based on the true self.

The seeker has to get rid of all his doubts by deeper thinking and reasoning that is, all his doubts on every question. Perfect understanding and assimilation cannot be reached if his understanding is based on the ego or the waking entity, which holds as the  Self. When he realizes the soul as the Self then there is no confusion,  the wisdom dawns automatically.

One has to overcome doubt by acquiring non-dual wisdom. The seeker should keep on thinking about his doubts until they are solved; he should not stop until this point is reached.

The path of truth is not the path of blind beliefs.  Deeper inquiry, analysis, and reasoning pries into the truth, the source, and the validity of the knowledge religionists and yogis claim. Therefore it is the most difficult part of the study of existence. :~Santthosh Kumaar

Sage Ramana Maharishi says:-Is not necessary to study the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita and Brahma Sutras.+

Sage Ramana Maharishi  said:~

Q by D:~ Is not necessary to study the Vedas or at least the Prasthanatraya (the Bhagavad Gita, Dasopanishad, and Brahma Sutras, all with commentaries)to ensure firm realization?

Sage Ramana Maharishi:~ No. Do you need all that to see yourself? All that is intellectual wealth, useful in explaining doubts and difficulties if others rise them or if you yourself encounter them in the course of thinking. But to attain realization, all that is not necessary. You want fresh water to drink, but you do not require all the water of the river Ganges to quench your thirst(Page 111/112 of Practical guide to know yourself c/e by A.R.N).

This surely indicates the path of truth is an independent path with nothing to with the religion and scriptures.

Sage Sankara says:~ VC59 The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown, and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.

Thus,  Sage Sankara indicates that scriptural studies are useless in the pursuit of truth.  Then why seekers of truth must indulge in scriptural studies and waste their precious time and life.

Even   Upanishads also confirm this:~

Katha Upanishad:~ This Atman cannot be attained by the study of the Vedas, or by intelligence, nor by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Atman reveals Its own form. (Ch-II -23-P-20)
Mundaka Upanishad: ~ This Atman cannot be attained through study of the Vedas, nor through intelligence, nor through much learning. He who chooses Atman—by him alone is Atman attained. It is Atman that reveals to the seeker Its true nature. (3 –page-70 Mundaka Upanishad  Upanishads by Nikilanada)

The scriptures indicate that Atman is Brahman, and Brahman is the ultimate truth. Therefore,  the soul, which is present in the form of consciousness, is the ultimate truth.  Thus, realizing the ultimate truth is the prime goal.   A well-directed inquiry, analysis, and reasoning will lead one to his non-dual destination.
Self-Realization is a direct realization of the ultimate truth or real god, in contrast with traditional paths, which are indirect. And the other paths cannot lead to the ultimate destination because they are based on the false self, which they hold as the real Self and false experience as reality.

Seeker of truth has to get rid of his doubts through deeper self-search on his own, to realize the fact that, the self is not the form but the Self is formless. Thus,  his analysis and reasoning have to be based on the formless, not on the form.  Simply going on believing and accepting whatever is said by the punditry will not lead one towards the path of wisdom. All the doubt has to be got rid of "by the sword of Self-Knowledge."  The scriptures and yoga are not necessary if one follows the inner (mental) path.  Religion and yoga are not the means to the path of wisdom.

Then it is no use going a roundabout way, trace the Brahman which is the formless substance, and witness of the universe, which is in the form of the mind.  By tracing the source of the mind or universe one will be able to realize the Brahman.

Thus, self-knowledge is meant only for those who have an intense urge, and courage to accept the truth with humility and reject the untruth. Since people start comparing their scriptural knowledge, it becomes impossible to assimilate and realize the non-dual truth.   Therefore, there is no need to convince anyone other than our own selves to get a firm conviction.

Wisdom is that which liberates one from experiencing the illusion (waking) as reality-- this is the criterion of truth. Pundits don't appear to be liberated, they look enslaved. They talk about liberation,  but they don't look free. They seem to be bound with a thousand fetters.

The orthodox people are more enslaved than others because they live in a self-imposed prison. A householder may have a little freedom, but the gurus, yogis saints are more stuck with their own idea of truth than others. Orthodoxies are just blind followers of tradition. They cannot move freely, they cannot sit freely, and they cannot live freely.

Many people pretend they are self-realized just by being orthodox one cannot get liberation.  Because yogi practices Samadhi he will not get liberated. Everyone has their own idea of liberation.

The most important thing is that neither society nor politics nor any religion have anything to do with the ultimate truth or Brahman. Self –Knowledge helps the seeker transcend emotion, transcending form, time,  and space. Perhaps this is why the pursuit of truth, has not had much impact.

There is no wisdom whatsoever in this. Scriptures are just a collection of words. Thus,  wisdom is not found in the scriptures. Wisdom is within oneself. The truth is not found in words.  The Truth is hidden by the 'I'.

The scriptures are filled just with information. By accumulating information one cannot attain wisdom.  No matter how much one knows, wisdom is not attained. One can go on gathering more and more knowledge, learn the scriptures by heart, become parrots, memorize each and every sutra or stanza, and let the complete Vedas be imprinted in his memory -- but still, the wisdom will not dawn.

People think that mastering scriptural knowledge is wisdom.  Pundits and religious gurus call scriptural knowledge as wisdom. Scriptural knowledge binds one instead thus it is not liberation.  Wisdom is that which liberates one from experiencing the duality as reality.

That is why Sage Sankara, indicated in Bhaja Govindam says: ~ (Jnana Viheena Sarva Mathena Bajathi na Muktim janma Shatena) - one without knowledge does not obtain liberation even in a hundred births, no matter which religious faith he follows.

Sage Sankara said: ~ Talk as much philosophy as you like, worship as many Gods as you please, observe ceremonies, and sing devotional hymns, but the liberation will never come, even after a hundred aeons, without realizing the Oneness.
Sage  Sankara says: ~ VC~58. Loud speech consisting of a shower of words, the skill in expounding the Scriptures, and likewise erudition - these merely bring on a little personal enjoyment to the scholar but are no good for Liberation.

59. The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown, and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.

60. The Scriptures consisting of many words are a dense forest that merely causes the mind to ramble. Hence, men of wisdom should earnestly set about knowing the true nature of the Self.

61. For one who has been bitten by the serpent of Ignorance, the only remedy is the knowledge of Brahman. Of what avail are the Vedas and (other) Scriptures, Mantras (sacred formulae), and medicines to such a one?

62. A disease does not leave off if one simply utters the name of the medicine, without taking it; (similarly) without direct realization one cannot be liberated by the mere utterance of the word Brahman.

 63. Without causing the objective universe to vanish and without knowing the truth of the Self, how is one to achieve Liberation by the mere utterance of the word Brahman? — It would result merely in an effort of speech.

64. Without killing one’s enemies, and possessing oneself of the splendor of the entire surrounding region, one cannot claim to be an emperor by merely saying, ‘I am an emperor’.

65. As a treasure hidden underground requires (for its extraction) competent instruction, excavation, the removal of stones and other such things lying above it, and (finally) grasping, but never comes out by being (merely) called out by name, so the transparent Truth of the self, which is hidden by Maya and its effects, is to be attained through the instructions of a knower of Brahman, followed by reflection, meditation and so forth, but not through perverted arguments.

66. Therefore, the wise should, as in the case of disease and the like, personally strive by all the means in their power to be free from the bondage of repeated births and deaths.

Thus, Sage Sankara clearly indicated that: - yoga, intellectualism, and scriptural mastery are not the means to self-knowledge.  But by the realization of one's identity with consciousness, which is the ultimate truth or Brahman, freedom from experiencing the illusion as reality is possible,  by no other means. :~Santthosh Kumaar

The Scriptures are of value only when dealing with persons who are incapable of understanding truth.+

To realize the ultimate truth or Brahman no scriptures are needed. I am highlighting only the rational views of the sages of truth.

No one can stay as the 'Self' without realizing the self. After realizing the 'Self nothing stays as reality other than the self.  It is foolish to say I AM THAT, I AM THIS without realizing  “what the 'Self' is” and “what the 'Self' is not”.

A permanent view of ‘what is unreal’ and ‘what is unreal’ can come only after soul-centric reasoning; such knowledge cannot change. Were the seeker who is sufficiently sharp enough,  he could grasp the unreal nature of the world,  by soul-centric reasoning alone.  To know the whole truth, one must know the whole universe, otherwise, he gets only half-truth.

People think that by studying Vedas one will be able to get Self-realization,  but it is not so.

Vedic studies lead to nowhere. What is the use of studying scriptures when Upanishads itself declares:-

Katha Upanishad:~ This Atman cannot be attained by the study of the Vedas, or by intelligence, or by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Atman reveals Its own form. (Katha Upanishad Ch-II -23-P-20)

Mundaka Upanishad:~ This Atman cannot be attained through the study of the Vedas, nor through intelligence, nor through much learning. He who chooses Atman—by him alone is Atman attained. It is the Atman that reveals to the seeker Its true nature. (3 page-70 - Mundaka Upanishad- Upanishads by Nikilanada)

When the Upanishad says:  the human goal is to acquire Self-Knowledge and they indicate the personal gods, scriptures, worship, and rituals are not the means to Self –Knowledge, then why anyone should indulge in it.

The Upanishads declare:~

Mundaka Upanishad 1:2:8:~ “Remaining in the fold of ignorance and thinking “we are extremely wise and learned,” the fools with boastful nature ramble about like the blind led by the blind alone.”

Mundaka Upanishad 3:2:3:~“The weak and timid cannot realize the Self. Self-Realization is not possible through intellect or hearing the spiritual discourse. One who welcomes God in every activity, through a thorough controlled and disciplined life, to him also the Soul is revealed

Katha Upanishad 1:2:23:~The Soul cannot be realized through hearing a scholarly explanation of the discourses, not even by the intellect.

Katha Upanishad 1:3:6:~ “Through the knowledge of the Soul, God, one is pure and clean constantly.” Neither by reading the book nor by taking a bath at the holy place has one become pure. Inner purity is possible when one remains in constant touch with the Soul. Constant Soul Consciousness is real purity.

Kena Upanishad 2:4:~ When it is known through every state of cognition, it is rightly known, for (by such knowledge) one attains life eternal. Through ones 'own self' one gains power and through wisdom, one gains immortality.

Kena Upanishad 2:5: ~ If here one knows it, then there is the truth, and if here one knows it not, there is a great loss. Hence, seeing the Real in all beings, wise men become immortal on departing from this world.

Scriptures are being added from time to time. This process will go on. There is the final authority among them? One contradicts the other: duality reigns supreme.

The Upanishads are self-contradictory. Every pundit even gives conflicting interpretations of them. The final authority, therefore, is using one’s own reason. One should apply his reason to them.

The scriptures are for ignorant masses, who wholly accept the material world as it presents itself. Gnana is for those who have begun to realize that things are not what they seem.

The Scriptures are of value only when dealing with persons who are incapable of understanding truth. They have no value as an authority for those who use reason.

I quote only verified citations form the scriptures. I need no scriptures, but I quote them to help the seekers to realize the religion, scriptures and the belief of God, is nothing to do with the ultimate truth or Brahman.

The Upanishads are the only scriptures in the world that declare:~

It is impossible to find and realize the truth via religion and scriptural study.

That is why Sage Sankara says: VC~ 58.

65. The religion is based on the body (form) as the self since it is based on birth. Spirituality is based on the soul (formless). Thus,  there is a need to bifurcate the religion from spirituality.

Religion views and judges on the standpoint of the physical self/ego, whereas the in path of wisdom,   everything is viewed, judged, and concluded,  on the base of the Soul, the Self.

Whatever is based on the physical entity (ego or you)  is not spirituality,  because the Soul, the  Self has no form, so it has no religion.  Therefore, the seeker of truth has to rectify the reasoning base, from form to formless, to understand and assimilate the Self-Knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana.  :~Santthosh Kumaar

Hinduism is mixer of many ideologies one gets confused which is true philosophy.+

When one goes into the annals of history it looks like the true Advaita expounded by Sage Sankara and  Sage  Goudpada was lost or mutilated by the orthodox cult, because their preaching is based on Nonduality and practices are based on duality.

Sage Sankara says in Brahma Sutras:~ 'Brahman is the cause of the world, whereas in Mandukya he denies it. This is because he says that at the lower stage of understanding, the former teaching must be given, for people will get frightened as they cannot understand how the world can be without a cause, but to those in a higher stage, the truth of non-causality can be revealed.

Sage Sankara himself has warned us not to use ambiguous words and to practice semantic analysis in his book "Definition of one's own Self. (Page 199, v.24 of "Sankara's Selected Works)

Bhagavan Buddha found religion in such a worthless state, with so many vile animal sacrifices, that he attacked religion.  Sage Sankara did not seek to destroy religion like Bhagavan Buddha, but he advocated reforming it for better. He did this because he saw that the masses had to have some form of religion as they were not ripe intellectually for truth.

Sage  Sankara's sex experience in Benares and occupying the body of another man and then having sexual intercourse with his wife, is a story created by pundits hiding the real fact. Sage Sankara had the scientific spirit and when told by Saraswathi the woman that he was talking freely about sex, being a Sanyasi, he wanted to know the truth by having actual intercourse himself and thus learning by experiment and observation. Thus, this has to be viewed by the seeker from a rational standpoint, because sex is part of the illusion on the ultimate standpoint.   Sage Sankara stressed the great importance of freeing our use of words from all ambiguity.

Buddhists and Jains did not believe in the Vedic positions, did not accept the scriptures. Hence, Sage  Sankara had to meet their objections also.  Biographical anecdotes about his persecution of Jains and Buddhists or of his challenges to self-immolation for the loser of a debate are all foolish tales fabricated after his lifetime either by his own followers who took him to be a religious propagator but not as a  philosopher or by the dualistic cult.

The religious pundits of the Adavitic sect relate boastfully pseudo-historical stories of how  Sage Sankara's school put down, persecuted end exterminated the Buddhists, as though this was something to be proud of. However, these stories are either exaggerations or false stories fabricated by pundits or priestcraft. The religious pundits are mere followers of the religion, never having understood the depth of Advitic philosophy. Sage Sankara gave religion and scholasticism, and yoga no less than philosophy, to the world.

Sage Sankara's commentary on Manduka is pure philosophy, but many of his other books are presented from a religious standpoint to help those who cannot rise up to the philosophy.  North India is the home of mysticism and deification and South India of keen rational truth.

Sage Sankara had only four fully trained disciples, although he advised some kings. His doctrines spread after his lifetime. His books were dictated to assistants as he traveled. So, only a few were capable of understanding his philosophy.

Sage Sri, Sankara always traveled and he never lived in a monastery. He simply instructed his disciples to build one here and there " and then left because he was busy spreading his doctrines.

Some who followed  Sage Sankara are blind followers of the orthodoxy, never having understood the Advaitic philosophy are religious scholars not Gnanis, and they are unable to grasp the non-dual -truth.

Sage Sankara says the seeker must first know what is before him. If he cannot know that, what else can he know or understand? If he gives up the external world in his inquiry, he cannot get the whole truth.

Some thinkers hold views of Maya which are entirely incorrect and untenable. They do not know Sankara's Upanishad Bashyas, but only the Brahma Sutra Bashya.  The followers of Sage Sankara have constituted a religious sect. Thus, all movements ultimately degenerate.

In the commentary to "Brahma Sutras Sage Sankara says:~ ." "The highest beatitude is not to be attained by Yoga." (Sacred Books of East Series page 298 Vol.1)   And he also says Samadhi is the same as sleep (p.312).

~ This clearly indicates that yoga is not the means to self-realization.  And yogis Samadhi is not  Advaitic wisdom.

Sage Sankara's commentary to Brahma Sutras (Chap.3.4.50) shows that the Gnani "should pass through life", not run away from life, and should take a middle course between seeking worldly honor and worldly abasement.

Sage Sankara varied his practical advice and doctrinal teaching according to the people he was amongst. He never advised them to give up their particular religion or beliefs or metaphysics completely; he only told them to give up the worst features of abuse: at the same time, he showed just one step forward towards the truth.  Sri, Sankara was extremely precise and careful in his choice of words.

Sage Sankara did more than writing books or initiate Sanyasins: He brought India into unity as a nation. He advised the mass: Worship what they wish, remain in their particular religion but remember they are also part of a larger whole.

Few Pundits have caught the spirit; they are merely fond of his words.  Sage  Sankara’s spirit is that of an appeal to reason, with scripture dragged in as second and lesser support afterward.

Sage Sankara gave religious, ritual or dogmatic instruction to the mass, but pure philosophy only to the few who could rise to it. Hence, the interpretation of his writings by commentators is often confusing because they mix up the two viewpoints. Thus, they may assert that ritual is a means of realizing Brahman, which is absurd.

Centuries have passed since  Sage Sankara appeared, yet it is very hard to find his wisdom understood anywhere in the world today. It is because so few could rise to his level. Hence, the dualistic cults and devotional sects came into existence prospered.

It may not have been possible for him to have written so many books during such a short term of existence of 32 years. The truth is that he wrote very few books. Those actually written by him were Commentaries on Brahma Sutras and the Upanishads and on the Gita. All other books ascribed to him were not written down by his own hand. They are merely collections of notes recorded by his disciples from his sayings, talk, and discussions.

Sage Sankara wrote his commentaries on Manduka Upanishads commentary first, and then as this revealed that he thoroughly understood the subject, his gurus requested him to write the commentary on Badarayana's Brahma Sutras, which was a popular theological work universally studied by Advaitins. That is why his commentary is written from a lower dualistic point, for those who cannot rise higher, save that here and there Sage  Sankara occasionally has strewn a few truly Advaitic sentences.

Since, Hinduism is a mixer of many ideologies one gets confused which is true philosophy because the dual, non-dual and qualified non-dual philosophies all claim that they are based on Vedas.  And many believe the inherited beliefs of their forefathers are pure and sacred without verifying the facts. All rituals and individualized gods are added from time to time.  Only when one tries to go deeper into the annals of history one will be able to find that all the present days’ beliefs and rituals are not part of the Santana Dharma or Vedic religion.

It is necessary for the seeker to do his homework, and verify the validity of all the claims, rather than blindly believe, what others expound as knowledge, till, the uncontradicted truth is obtained.

The seeker must have the courage of Buddha to accept the truth and reject the untruth. Since Buddha rejected religion, the idea of God, and scriptures, therefore, it is evident that he has gone through every aspect and verified and found them to be inadequate and useless for the pursuit of truth.

Even Buddhism is mixed up with regional culture and traditions of the local religion, wherever it existed. Thus to get the full essence of Buddhism is very difficult.

The Buddhist scriptures were completely distorted by the time of Sage Sankara. Sage  Sankara had to criticize the Buddhist literature prevailing then as the Buddhists themselves were confused as to what Shunyata is. Vasubandhu and his disciple Dignaga (the latter lived about a couple of centuries before Sage Sankara) could not retain the original teachings of Lord Buddha.

At first Vasubandhu did not agree with his half-brother Asanga and wrote one book on Abhidharma and later on, he went to the side of Asanga and wrote a second book, where? he opposed his own earlier views on Abhidharma. Sage Sankara? had to criticize Buddhist knowledge? and literature of his time as he wanted to bring to us back the Pure Vedantic knowledge through his work on the Prasthanatraya. That is why there is a reference to the writing of Dharmakirti in Sutrabashya.

There is another aspect that:~  In Vishnu Purana also says that Lord Buddha created confusion. In Sarnat, he first taught about the Moral code which is basic. He talked about Anatma. Then? two decades later he taught the concept of Shunyata and? the tenets of Mahayana Buddhism.? Despite Nagarjuna's telling that Shunyata is not Nihilism and that Parajanaparamita also mentioning about the Shunyata after one leaves? the five? skandhas, there are and there will always be people who will go on calling Buddha's philosophy as Nihilism. About the origin of the? Tantric Buddhism also? there are controversies.

Hindus hold Lord Buddha being an Avatara of Lord Vishnu. It seems that in many Buddha viharas, probably more in Sri Lanka, there are statues of Lord Vishnu, which are looked at reverentially. by the Buddhists. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa also says that there is no doubt about Lord Buddha being an Avatara of Lord Vishnu. Swami Vivekananda tells us about him very superlatively.

Dr. Radhakrishnan says that he was a reformer of Hinduism. Personally, I worship him as the Avatara of Lord Vishnu.

Religion, yoga, and scriptures are for the ignorant masses, who wholly accept the material world as it presents itself. Wisdom is for those who have begun to realize that things are not what they seem.:~Santthosh Kumaar
